Summer Student: Ecological Demonstration Garden Assistant

Earthwise Society is a not for profit, charitable organization that has been a leader in community-based environmental education for over 30 years. We have an exciting opportunity located at our Agassiz location for an articulate and energetic individual who has a passion for organic gardening. Reporting to the Farm Coordinator, the Ecological Demonstration Garden Assistant will be responsible for the following:

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist in maintaining the Earthwise Agassiz Demonstration Garden as a destination community resource, ensuring that it is inviting and welcoming for visitors 
• Greet visitors to the garden, provide information to the public on ecological gardening, deliver educational tours of the garden areas
• Assist with the delivery of gardening education programs for youth, adults and seniors
• Assist with maintaining composting systems on site 
• Help with plant propagation from seeds and division, maintain plant starts
• Assist with special events at Earthwise or in the community 
• As part of a team, assist with tasks related to organic farming, including planting, maintenance, and soil amendment, harvesting and post harvest handling of produce 
• Assist with marketing initiatives including the farm store and CSA
• Assist with Earthwise Agassiz food security programs 
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Be currently a full-time student who will be returning to college or university in the fall
• Be enrolled in a program related to environmental studies, horticulture, or similar
• Be self-motivated, flexible, willing to take initiative, work well independently and in a team environment
• Be physically fit and enjoy working outside in all kinds of weather
• Have experience gardening and/or a strong personal interest in organic gardening
• Proven ability in working effectively with volunteers and/or co-workers
• Canadian citizen or permanent resident and aged 30 or younger (Service Canada requirements) 

This is an 8-week temporary position with a flexible start date sometime between late May through June. Accommodations may be available on site. Weekend work will be required.
