Your Opportunity:

The Manager of the BC Beverage Technology Access Centre (BCBTAC) is an engaging position that reports directly to the Director, Applied Research. This position is ideally suited for individuals with deep connections to the beverage industry either locally or nationally. As Manager of the BCBTAC, you are equally comfortable managing the operations of a research facility and talking with industry associations and beverage producers. You are confident overseeing the financial day to day but are also able to present a research proposal to a group of potential research partners. The Manager have an eye on operational targets, but also have a vision for potential areas of expansion, follow projects and contracts through to their completion.

Working with the Director, Applied Research you are excited to build the future directions for applied research related to the beverage industry and to grow services and training for the beverage community. You are committed to the success of the BCBTAC.

Education and Experience:

  • An MBA or MSc in Oenology, Food Science, Biochemistry or related science or business degree is required.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in a client-focused organization managing technical and service personnel in the areas of beverage development, production, analysis and business operations, and budgeting is required.
  • A thorough understanding and previous experience in the production and marketing of at least one of fermented, brewed or distilled beverages with a basic understanding of the overall beverage sector is required.
  • Experience in beverage research and development activities with a record of accomplishment of bringing projects to completion is required. Active involvement with an established network in at least one beverage sector related to the Okanagan or BC industry is an asset.
  • Experience working with a Board or Association is an asset.

Functions and Duties:

Functions and Duties

  1. Plays a key leadership role in direction, growth and development of the BC Beverage Technology Access Centre (BCBTAC); is responsible for daily and business operations.
  2. Develops and implements a strategic business plan in concert with the Provost, VP Academic that is in alignment with the BCBTAC Advisory Board recommendations.
  3. Develops, implements and monitors long and short-range plans, operating and capital budgets, policies and procedures and business plans for the BCBTAC that enhance or achieve operational objectives that are aligned to the strategic plan of the College.
  4. Provides outreach and client services to support new business development; secures clients by a variety of means including networking, cold calling and advertising; identifies and pursues new partnerships and key customer relationships that result in increased growth / performance and revenue of the BCBTAC; defines long-term strategic goals and engage in planning to develop new business.
  5. Directs and oversees all marketing and communication plans and initiatives to promote the BCBTAC, including maintaining an active online presence, as per Advisory Board recommendations and College policies.
  6. Identifies potential research and funding opportunities within each market segment.
  7. Responsible for fostering and maintaining existing partner relationships and cultivating new relationships to establish resources, referrals and other support.
  8. Maintains a record of industry-supporting activities for use in metrics-reporting and impact analysis.
  9. Manages all BCBTAC employees; responsible for personnel matters including recruitment and selection, orientation, training and staff development, supervision,
  10. performance management and evaluation, scheduling and prioritization of work requirements, as well as recommending any disciplinary action.
  11. Participates in Tech-Access Canada and NSERC-related activities as required, responsible for the Centre and Laboratories Accreditation by provincial and federal agencies.
  12. Ensures fee-for-service contracts meet annual projections, monitors against year-end budget expectations.
  13. Sits on the BCBTAC Advisory Board as an ex-officio member; provides support in terms of drafting agendas, providing monthly budget reports and making recommendations.
  14. Supervises the process of developing / enforcing safety protocols and standard operating procedures for the BCBTAC commercial laboratories and fermentation facilities.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven ability in sales
  • Proficient in proposal writing and familiarity with research grants
  • Knowledge of provincial and national beverage regulations, Quality and Food Safety Policies and Guidelines
  • Experience with quality control systems, ability to travel
  • Proven ability for self-directed work
  • Proven leadership and motivational skills
  • Excellent organizational, administrative and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in an academic environment

Appointment Type: Exempt – Term Full-time
Appointment Start Date: 01/06/2025
Appointment End Date: 03/30/2029

Annual Salary/Hourly Rate: Range $92,139 to $135,137. Typical Hiring Range $110,567 to $122,852.
