Position: ECOLOGICAL LAND USE ASSISTANT (Summer student)

Earthwise Society is a not for profit, charitable organization that has been a leader in community-based environmental education for over 30 years. We have an exciting opportunity located at our Agassiz location for an articulate and energetic individual who has a passion for sustainable land use, farming, and gardening. Reporting to the Farm Projects Coordinator, the Ecological Land Use Assistant will be responsible for the following:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in maintaining the Earthwise Agassiz Demonstration Garden as a destination community resource, ensuring that it is inviting and welcoming for visitors -
  • Greet visitors to the garden, provide information to the public on ecological gardening
  • Participate in all aspects of small scale organic farming including assisting with field preparation, maintenance, planting , crop harvest, and post harvest handling
  • Harvest vegetables and prepare harvest boxes for the Community Supported Agriculture program ( CSA)
  • Participate in habitat stewardship initiatives including trail maintenance, planting native plants, and invasive species removal, lead teams of volunteers
  • Assist with the delivery of site tours and environmental education programs for youth and adults
  • Attend outreach events in the community, assist with marketing to raise awareness about Earthwise and our programs and engage new visitors.
  • Assist with planning and implementing special events at Earthwise
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Be currently a full-time student who will be returning to college or university in the fall
  • Be enrolled in a program related to environmental studies, horticulture, or similar
  • Be self-motivated, flexible, willing to take initiative, work well independently and in a team environment
  • Be physically fit and enjoy working outside in all kinds of weather
  • Have experience gardening and/or a strong personal interest in organic gardening
  • Proven ability in working effectively with volunteers and/or co-workers
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident and aged 30 or younger (Service Canada requirements)

This is an 8-week temporary position with a flexible start date sometime between late May through June and the wage is $17.85/hr.

Accommodations may be available on site.

Weekend work will be required.
