Hiring: Environmental Farm Program Intern
Organization: Earthwise Society
Location: Delta, Metro Vancouver BC

Earthwise Society is a not-for-profit environmental education organization that operates an ecological demonstration garden and organic teaching farms in Delta and Agassiz BC. Based at the Delta location, the Environmental Farm Program Intern will assist with organic farming initiatives and help to increase community awareness and involvement in sustainable agriculture and food security programs at the local scale.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with operations of a community based small scale organic teaching farm, from field preparation through post harvest handling of crops
- Help with planning and implementation of demonstration food gardens as an educational resource for program delivery
- Assist in the development and delivery of educational programs for children and adults related to sustainable urban agriculture at the teaching farm and demonstration food garden
- Participate in organic soil management including on site composting, crop rotation, and cover cropping
- Assist with marketing and awareness initiatives, including CSA, farm cart, restaurant sales, and farmer’s markets
- Assist with established community food security initiatives to reduce food waste and improve access to local produce
- Prepare educational materials including e-newsletters with tips on food preservation, food growing, and recipes
- Assist with enhancement and maintenance of plantings for Earthwise Society’s ecological demonstration garden featuring native, drought tolerant, and pollinator plants; lead volunteer teams
- Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-secondary education in land and food systems, horticulture, or environmental field
- Experience with organic gardening or farming
- At least one years’ related experience
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Proven ability in working effectively with volunteers and/or co-workers
- Experience with the delivery of environmental education programs an asset
- Be self-motivated, flexible, and work well independently and as part of a team
- Be physically fit and enjoy working outside in all kinds of weather
- Must be aged 30 and under and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
TERMS:
This is a 6 month internship position from May 15th through Nov. 15, 35 hours per week at the rate of $23/hr. Training will be provided. Weekend work will be required.
