Schedule: 35-40 hours a week, Monday to Friday. Start and end times depend on the time of year and sometimes weather. 9-5, 8-4, 7-3 are all possible. Some longer days might be required to make up for lost time due to weather, or just to catch up on harvesting for the market. Some Saturday markets may be required.
About the farm:
Good Clean Farm is a certified organic farm in Salmon River NS. We grow a wide variety of organic vegetables for a 50 member CSA, restaurants, and the Truro Farmers' Market. We practice a no-till approach to growing so we prepare beds and cultivate vegetables using a variety of hand tools. We have 2 greenhouses and a caterpillar tunnel for growing all season. Check out our instagram, @goodcleanfarm to get an idea of what our set up is. Potential candidates are welcome to visit the farm and see the housing if possible. Also pictures of the trailer are available upon request.
Job tasks will include, but are not limited to: weeding crops (by hand and with tools), harvesting/ cleaning/ packing produce, trellising tomatoes and cucumbers, planting, and bed preparation. Sometimes we have to repair our deer fence, or do small building projects. In the coming year we will be upgrading the driveway and building a new walk-in cooler.
No experience necessary, just an eagerness to learn a variety of tasks, and a desire to work efficiently within our systems. Experience in fast-paced environments and production style work would be an asset.
Willing to consider this opportunity a “paid apprenticeship” as well. I have 10 seasons of experience growing organically. Certified organic for 4 years. Outside of the 35-40 we can discuss what goes into running an organic market/csa farm from the ground up, look at financial numbers and crop planning. During work hours is always a great opportunity for learning as well. Always looking to discuss why we do things the way we do.
