Sustainable land use, organic farming and gardening education

Position: Farmer-Educator

Earthwise Society is a not-for-profit environmental education organization with demonstration projects for sustainable land use in Tsawwassen and Agassiz BC. We have an exciting opportunity at our Agassiz location for an experienced Farmer-Educator who is interested in assisting with community engagement and education initiatives related to organic agriculture. Based at Earthiwse Societ's Agassiz location, the Farmer – Educator will be responsible for the following:

Duties and Responsibilities:

Farming and Food Security

  • Carry out farming operations for a small-scale organic teaching farm, including field prep, planting, maintenance, harvesting and post-harvest handling of crops
  • Maintain on-site composting as a component of organic soil management
  • Assist with implementing strategies to extend the growing season through crop selection, storage, and winter farming techniques
  • Coordinate seasonal harvest box program
  • Coordinate, engage and train volunteers to participate in farming tasks
  • Be responsible for tool and equipment use and maintenance, keep farm and storage areas organized and tidy
  • Ensure that the overall site is maintained as a destination learning resource to be clean, safe, and attractive to visitors

Education and Community Engagement

  • Deliver hands-on education programs for children and youth
  • Plan and deliver Land Based learning programs for school groups
  • Plan and deliver educational workshops for adults on food production and organic farming techniques, and related environmental topics
  • Plan and carry out outreach and engagement activities and events, greet site visitors, and help to increase engagement of local community
  • Implement marketing and sales initiatives including agritourism, CSA, farm store, and direct sales
  • Represent Earthwise at Farmers Markets and other community events
  • Recruit and engage community gardeners, provide support, ensure safety and organic growing practices are followed
  • Implement special events, programs and workshops on site to raise awareness, build support, and grow participation
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Post secondary education in agriculture, horticulture, or environmental fields
  • At least one year’s experience working on a small-scale farm required
  • Knowledge of composting and organic practices; organic experience preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; experience with community outreach or experiential environmental education
  • Be self-motivated, flexible, work well independently and in a team environment
  • Be physically fit and enjoy working outside in all kinds of weather
  • Proven ability in working effectively with volunteers and/or co-workers
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a criminal record check.

This is a full-time position, 35 hours per week through Nov 30, 2025. The position may be extended or renewed based upon the availability of funding and a positive performance review. Weekend work will be required.

The position is located in Agassiz, BC. Accommodation may be available.

The wage for this position is $24-$26/hr depending on experience.
