The Community Services (CS) department at Fred Victor is a multi-service, multi-site structure that encompasses the 40 Oak Community HUB and community programs, Consumption and Treatment Services, Employment and Training Services, Drop-Ins, Warming and Keep Cool Programs and Food Services. Additionally, it operates a social purpose enterprise with catering services and spearheads a significant Peer Training Initiative that prioritizes the involvement of individuals with lived experience.

Fred’s Kitchen is deeply committed to addressing food security while providing opportunities for skills development, training, and employment placements within the food services sector. We focus on empowering individuals with lived experience to gain valuable skills and access employment opportunities in the culinary and hospitality fields. Through our program, participants are equipped with the tools and support needed to succeed in the food services industry while contributing to our mission of ensuring access to nutritious meals and fostering community well-being.

Under the direction of the Chef Manager, the Dishwasher is responsible for the cleanliness of the kitchen and work spaces. This dishwasher oversees the dish pit area and will wash all kitchen items, with a focus on reusable cookware and serving containers. The Dishwasher is also responsible for working within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team and assists in the preparation of nutritionally balanced and culturally appropriate meals for Fred Victor program participants.

What You Will Do:

  • Work with specialized cleaning equipment (industrial dishwasher), managing water temperatures and refilling chemicals
  • Handwashing larger items and managing a 3-compartment sink system
  • Sort, stack and store all cleaned items in an organized and safe manner
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the commercial kitchen and other work areas including thoroughly clean walls, all appliances, underneath counters, shelving, sanitizes sinks and all working surfaces, empties and cleans all trash receptacles
  • Receive and store deliveries appropriately using the first in/first out method
  • Manage garbage systems
  • Understand and adheres to departmental standards of cleanliness by always following sanitation policies
  • Understand and adheres to regulations pertaining to Food Handling sanitation & Safety and Food Premise Regulations.
  • Basic food prep & portioning
  • Upholds the values and standards of a community kitchen by respecting the diversity, wellness, and lived experience of colleagues, tenants, and community members
  • Problem solves and when necessary, communicates problems and non-routine matters to the Food Services management
  • Attends meetings as part of the Food Services teams
  • Provides positive, polite and responsive customer service
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chef Manager

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Experience in fast paced environment an asset
  • Current Food Handler’s Certificate an asset
  • Personal experience and use of community resources and/or community food programs is considered an asset
  • Familiarity with the health and safety guidelines for food preparation
  • Ability to work productively within a team setting and also independently
  • Self-starter – able to work with little or no direction
  • Strong oral communication skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse clientele.
  • Ability to manage conflicting demands
  • Well-developed interpersonal, conflict resolution, crisis management and sound judgment skills
  • Ability to plan and prioritize work, to adapt to changing conditions, and to develop creative solutions to problems
  • Strong understanding of the factors that contribute to homelessness and poverty

Compensation and Benefits:

  • For the Dishwasher, Fred Victor offers an hourly rate of $18.35
  • 7% Vacation Pay
