Position: Carrot Green Roof Coordinator

Type: Seasonal Full-time Contract, 30-hour work week (on average)
Duration: May 1 - Oct 31
Rate: $30/hr

The schedule will adapt according to seasonal demands. This position operates out of the Carrot Green Roof site at The Carrot Common at 348 Danforth Ave, Toronto.


Summary

The Carrot Green Roof (CGR) is an urban garden and community resource centre located on the roof of the Carrot Common in Toronto. It serves as a working food-producing garden, educational hub, and community gathering space with a focus on green roof technology and urban agriculture.

The CGR Coordinator is a hands-on role responsible for directlyrunning all aspects of the green roof gardens. The successful applicant willactively work in the garden daily, performing all tasks required to maintainand cultivate the space. They will be responsible for vegetable and plantproduction, native perennial care, compost management, and general gardenmaintenance. In addition, they will engage with volunteers, coordinateeducational opportunities, and ensure the site remains safe and well-maintained.

The CGR Coordinator reports to the Carrot Cache board and collaborateswith the Carrot Cache Coordinator while aligning with the strategic vision setby the Carrot Cache Board and its members. Support is available from CarrotCommon staff as needed.

The CGR is funded by the Carrot Cache Community Resource Inc.


Core Responsibilities

Direct Garden Work & Site Maintenance (Primary Role)

  • Perform all hands-on tasks required to maintain and operate the CGR gardens daily
  • Lead seasonal planning, including planting schedules, seed ordering, and crop rotation
  • Ensure all garden-related duties are completed, including watering, weeding, pruning, mulching, pest management, and general upkeep
  • Oversee and perform native perennial garden care with an emphasis on ecological management and pollinator habitat creation
  • Maintain and operate sub-irrigation planters, irrigation systems, and compost bins
  • Physically carry out tasks such as lifting, digging, planting, and working in various weather conditions
  • Ensure that the site is safe, accessible, and well-equipped for volunteers and visitors

Volunteer & Community Engagement

  • Recruit, train, and lead volunteers in garden tasks throughout the season
  • Develop partnerships with community groups and urban agriculture organizations
  • Organize and lead educational workshops and seasonal open house events

Administrative & Planning Duties

  • Participate in planning meetings with Carrot Common staff and the Carrot Cache Board
  • Develop and adhere to a seasonal work plan and budget, tracking expenses
  • Submit weekly activity reports summarizing progress, challenges, and upcoming tasks
  • Assist with funding proposals when requested
  • Coordinate and conduct end-of-season evaluations alongside the Carrot Cache Board

Candidate Criteria

  • Minimum 2-3 years of direct, hands-on experience in ecological vegetable production, including managing crops from seed to harvest
  • Strong plant identification skills and knowledge of native perennial care
  • Familiarity with sub-irrigation planters, mulch/ground covers, and irrigation systems; experience with green roof infrastructure is ideal
  • Physically fit and able to perform daily, repetitive garden tasks; capable of lifting 50 lbs and working in all weather conditions
  • Strong knowledge of the urban agriculture sector for partnership and educational development
  • Effective communication skills for engaging with volunteers and community members
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends for events
