Position: Organic Farm and Agri-tourism Assistant
Farm/Organization: Hearts Content Organic Farm

Location: between Brantford & Hamilton ON & on the rail trail 
Housing: Optional rental (furnished suite) / we may be able to help you with relocating

Eligibility: Canadian citizen, permanent resident or refugee, 30 years or younger
Term: 28-week full-time contract, starts in May 2024

Hearts Content Organic Farm is a small organic farm along the rail trail, that specializes in herbs, farmstay and conservation. Richard is a retired naturopathic doctor who specializes in herbs, wildcraft and making value added herbal products (salves, lip balms, dried herbs). We also focus on conservation (restoring wetlands, and planting shelterbelts, mini-forest and pollinators). We are very dedicated to:

  • fostering an inclusive community, particularly migrant farm workers, people with disabilities, seniors, and First Nations, and
  • protecting farmland, natural areas, and water resources.

We...

  • grow organic crops (e.g. medicinal & edible herbs, pollinators, berries & nuts),
  • do wildcrafting - harvesting herbs to dry for sale to an herbal company,
  • make value added products such as dried herbs, salves & lip balms,
  • host farmstay (camping, glamping and accessible suites),
  • work on conservation projects (restoring wetlands, planting shelterbelts, planting a small forest),
  • work to protect farmland, natural areas and water
  • promote ecotourism with bird and plant walks and
  • rescue and redistribute organic food, with a focus on migrant farm workers and seniors.

Job Description:

You would be involved in helping with the following:

  • planting, cultivating & harvesting organic crops
  • wildcrafting – harvesting and drying herbs,
  • making value added products such as dried herbs, salves & lip balms,
  • helping with caring for the grounds, campsites and farmstay units,
  • planting and caring for trees and shrubs
  • birding and plant walks,
  • sorting and redistributing organic food,
  • work to protect farmland, natural areas and water, and
  • outreach and social media.

We are seeking someone who is highly motivated, and who has skills with work related farming and tree care. We will provide mentoring and work with you.

This is a physically demanding job at times.

  • Term: Start in May, 28 weeks full time
  • Eligibility: Must be between 18 & 30 years old.
  • Pay: $20/hour, 35 hours/week (includes private apartment / to be discussed)
  • Benefits: organic fruit, vegetables & eggs, discount on herbal products, 4% vacation pay
  • Schedule: flexible 7-hour day shift, Monday to Friday, occasional weekends
  • Assets: Spanish speaking, experience with driving a tractor, comfortable using small tools and equipment, driver’s license
  • Experience: 1 year of related work
  • Ability to commute or relocate before starting work (required).
