Regenerative, no-till vegetable farming

Field Crew Position – 2025 Season

Positions: Field Crew Member
Term: Full-Time Seasonal, May 1 - Oct 31
Farm: Paper Kite Farm

Location: Prince Edward County, Ontario
Housing: Subsidized on-farm housing for crew members is available. Private rooms are available at below-market rates, with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. Utilities would be included, as is internet, laundry access, and a communal gathering space. This housing option is completely optional but can be particularly attractive for those relocating to Prince Edward County for the season.

About Our Farm

Paper Kite Farm is a regenerative market garden focused on building soil health while producing nutrient-dense vegetables for our local community. We specialize in growing diverse vegetables from the Asian diaspora, including varieties of Chinese greens, eggplants and peppers, and root crops. Operating on 6 acres of mixed-use farmland, we cultivate 1/2 acres of diverse vegetables using no-till practices and traditional agricultural wisdom. Our farm features permanent beds, composting systems, and water management techniques that reflect our commitment to climate resilience.

We serve our community through:
- Weekly farmers' markets in Prince Edward County
- CSA Farm Card program
- Select restaurant partnerships
- Educational workshops on sustainable farming

Position Overview

We're seeking dedicated field crew members who share our passion for regenerative agriculture and community food systems. Our growing practices emphasize soil health, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration while producing high-quality vegetables.

Daily Responsibilities

  • Seeding, transplanting, and crop maintenance
  • Harvest and post-harvest handling
  • Market preparation and occasional market attendance
  • Season extension work in our tunnels
  • Cover crop management and green manure implementation

Required Qualifications

  • Legally able to work in Canada
  • Physical capability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly and work in various weather conditions
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow specific protocols
  • Reliable transportation to the farm
  • Ability to maintain consistent work pace with the team throughout the season
  • Previous experience in farming, gardening, or related physical outdoor work an asset

Desired Skills & Qualities

No experience required, but priority will be given to those with:

  • Knowledge of or interest in regenerative agriculture practices
  • Experience with no-till farming methods
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
  • Strong problem-solving abilities
  • Interest in soil biology and ecological farming practices
  • Experience with season extension techniques

Schedule & Compensation

  • Season runs May 1 - October 31, 2025
  • 40 hours/week, Tuesday to Saturday
  • Typical hours: 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM,
  • Starting wage: $19-22/hour, based on prior experience
  • Weekly vegetable share
  • $100 gear stipend
  • End-of-season bonus based on farm performance
  • Professional development opportunities through workshop attendance

Our small team of 2-3 people works closely together in a supportive but fast-paced environment. We emphasize continuous learning, open communication, and mutual respect. Regular meetings ensure everyone's voice is heard and farm operations run smoothly. As a production farm, maintaining consistent work speed with fellow crew members throughout the entire season is essential for our efficiency and success.
