2025 "CAMP COOK" – ALGONQUIN PARK

Hiring: Algonquin Park Wilderness Log Cabin Cook
Type: Seasonal Contract (Full-Time)
Employer: Voyageur Quest & Voyageur Outfitting

Location: based out of Algonquin Park Access Pt #1, east of South River, Ontario.
Accommodation: Shared Lakeside Cabin (shared with other wilderness guides) accommodation while working. On your days off you are welcome to stay or commute.

THE ROLE

The Voyageur Quest Algonquin Wilderness Cook supports the needs primarily of our Algonquin Log Cabin (serving groups of 4 to 18). Additionally supports the Outfitter and the Broken Paddle Patio (serving various sized groups for breakfasts or bbq dinners), Cottage, Special Events, and School Programs.

The Cook is responsible for cooking, preparing, and serving meals to VQ visitors while ensuring food safety standards and kitchen policies are followed. The role also includes food service coordination ie planning for dietary restrictions, problem-solving menu issues, inventory management, placing online food orders, cleanup including dishes with the help of wilderness guides, serving, ensuring cleanliness and maintenance of the kitchen and may include shopping or picking up orders,

Applicants should have excellent organization skills, the ability to work in a small team, and background/understanding of food, menu, cooking, and baking, a special appreciation for Algonquin Park and our iconic "off the grid" (solar-powered) Algonquin Log Cabin with an open kitchen environment, and a love of connecting with people.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Cooking/serving food for visitors to the site. Includes preparing special needs diets for allergies and food restrictions. Ensuring special diet requests and needs are met at each meal is a must.
  • Ensures the kitchen is running smoothly. Establishes a positive relationship with Wilderness Guides and support staff. Anticipates and deals proactively with problems
  • Prepares meals and ensures best practice cleaning practices. The ability to keep an organized kitchen while preparing meals is particularly important in an open kitchen environment that interacts with customers.
  • Ability to learn and utilize a menu planning app that organizes recipes makes meal plans and creates grocery lists.
  • Ability to place orders online for multiple shops at a time.
  • Foster a positive and nurturing environment between the kitchen and program wilderness guiding staff.
  • Interacting and communicating with visitors – an emphasis on relationship building and positive communication with visitors is key.
  • Implements safety procedures in the kitchen.
  • Preventative and ongoing kitchen maintenance and cleaning
  • Enjoys working in a unique "off-the-grid" rustic environment.

Qualifications:

  • Safe Food Handler’s Certificate.
  • Requires completion of High School Diploma at a minimum.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of considerable position-related experience is required.
  • Considerable experience preparing special diets is a strong asset. Special diets include but are not limited to: Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten-Free, and allergies etc.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills, good problem-solving skills, and the ability to work within a small team.
  • Must have email and telephone to communicate with the office.
  • Driver's license and car to get to and from workdays off.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Cook certification (college or other) - an asset.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (including a Vulnerable Sector Screening)

Seasonal Contract available: Spring and Summer
(option available for extend to Fall and again for Winter)

Compensation: $22-$25/hour (commensurate with experience)
*customers tip direct to staff

Accommodation: Lakeside shared (with other wilderness guides) cabin accommodation while working. On your days off you are welcome to stay or commute.
