ABOUT US

Zawadi Farm's mission is to promote sustainable agriculture, nurture community bonds, and empower individuals through education and access to fresh, locally sourced produce. Cultivating healthy food should go hand in hand with cultivating strong communities and a healthy environment. At Downsview Park in Toronto, we farm on a total of 2 acres as The Harambee Collective, an emerging farm coop. We are expanding our 25-week farm share (CSA) program. We sell our produce at our on-site farm stand and at weekend farmers markets in Toronto.

ROLE SUMMARY

Zawadi Farm is seeking an organized and passionate individual to join our team as Farm Manager. This position suits someone with solid farming experience, including experience managing people.

We will provide pre-job and on-going training and education as required. We are committed to giving you the tools to be successful. We are looking for a self-motivated team player with a positive attitude, and a solution-based mindset who is interested in pursuing a career in farming.

Typically, work stops between December and February. However, off-season/winter work is available for interested candidates.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Collaborate with the Operations Manager and the farm management team
  • Farm operation planning, scheduling, logging using Tend software
  • Lead the farm crew with training, workplace safety and organization, workflow and pace, and quality control
  • Responsible for maintaining the transplant and harvest logs, tool and equipment care and maintenance, and completing other operational and administrative duties
  • Lead all aspects of field and greenhouse production and support the harvest and wash/pack/storage operations
  • Assist with building projects and farm infrastructure setup

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE:

  • Minimum 3 years of farming experience, preferably in a production operation
  • Demonstrated management experience - you have had leadership roles and can motivate a team to work together to achieve a shared goal
  • Strong team player with excellent communication skills - you can give and receive direction and constructive feedback
  • Ability to work independently for long periods, and maintain a positive attitude in all types of weather
  • Attention to detail, a quick worker, and a fast learner
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and to stand, kneel, squat, bend, and lift frequently
  • Demonstrated ability to work respectfully with people of different ages, genders, abilities, cultural backgrounds, and with individuals who experience marginalization
  • Experience with carpentry, irrigation systems, and using farm equipment is an asset
  • Valid G driver's license is also an asset

OTHER DETAILS:

  • Reporting to: Farm Management team
  • Employment Status: Full-Time Seasonal
  • Compensation: $25-30 / hour (depending on experience), plus added benefits
    Schedule: 8am - 4pm; 35 hour/5 day work week, earlier start times mid-summer, some longer days (max 40 hrs/wk)
  • Work Location: Downsview Park (North York)
